International Society for Protein Termini (ISPT)

Our society

ISPT is an inclusive international community of scientists with a shared interest in protein N-terminal and C-terminal modifications and their downstream effects on protein functions.

Our aims

Our mission is to provide platforms for interdisciplinary discussions and collaborations, as well as strengthening the visibility of this growing scientific community. Our goals include promotion of science and research in the field of protein regulation via N- and C-termini and facilitating the international scientific exchange in the field of protein termini by organizing conferences, seminars and similar science-related events; and informing the international community of scientists on the scientific progress in N- and C-terminal modifications by holding presentations and issuing information material and scientific publications.

ISPT is a non-profit organization

Our history

Over past decades, research on protein termini has been continuously expanding in its components, mechanisms, and functions, now drawing attention from people in otherwise different fields. Scientists working on protein termini, including those on the „N-end rule pathway“, gradually realized that we need a network and a society to exchange ideas and promote close interactions with other scientists in this field. In 2017, a group of people in Europe held the „N-term 2017“ conference at Halle, Germany, the first international meeting focusing on protein N-termini across the kingdoms of life.

In 2018, we founded the International Society for Protein Termini (ISPT), a non-profit organization, aimed to gather together researchers in the fields of the „N-end rule pathway“ as well as all aspects of protein termini. These include the role of protein termini in proteolysis via the ubiquitin-proteasome system and the autophagy-lysosome system. Approximately 300 people including about 100 principal investigators and their labs have joined the ISPT, and we hope you will consider being one of them.

The „2019 Protein Termini“ conference, held in Seoul, South Korea, on October 4-5, 2019 was the first meeting of our ISPT (because ISPT was only founded after the N-term meeting 2017). The 2022 ISPT meeting was held in Bergen, Norway and the 2024 ISPT meeting in Oxford, UK.

The upcoming 2026 ISPT meeting will be situated in Palermo, Italy, in June and the next one is planned to be held in Philadelphia, USA.
